Is Your Website Copy Sloppy?
The best way to ensure your website is achieving the rankings that it deserves is to produce well-written copy that presents you in the best possible light.
Many people spend little time checking their spelling and grammar, but not paying close attention to the words you use on your website could be losing you business.
No matter what type of business you run, if your website copy is careless and sloppy why would customers want to spend their money with you?
Especially if they think they could get more of the same careless service.
Here are some examples of the spelling mistakes we have seen over the past few days:

In each of the cases above, the copy used is undermining the messages that the website (or in the second example a Google Ad Campaign) aims to portray.
Why would you take advice from someone who can’t spell their target words correctly?
Or, more accurately, who hasn’t taken the time to check that they are correct?
Why would you want to pay money for a luxury lodge whose bedrooms don’t appear to be up to standard?
When reading all three examples, it is clear what the copy should have said, and indeed what the websites are trying to tell the reader, but the misspellings reduce the credibility of the websites and the companies behind them.
It’s been noted for the past 7 years that spelling mistakes cost money.
Online entrepreneur Charles Duncombe ran a test on his website to see the impact a spelling mistake can have on sales; once the mistake was corrected he saw sales figures double.
This small SESS experiment demonstrates just how important spelling is to a website, and the impact it has on sales.
The importance of well-written copy for SEO
It isn’t just customers who appreciate a well-written website free from errors; search engines also do. If a user has typed a specific phrase into a search engine that your website should be ranking for, but you have spelt some of those words incorrectly, your site won’t be returned.
Bounce rate also affects a Google Page ranking, so if your landing pages are full of errors and customers decide that they don’t need to see any more, then you will see your website slide down the results pages.
How can you stop sloppy copy occurring?
It isn’t difficult to put these errors right, and in most cases spending 15 minutes re-reading a page before publishing will help eradicate small but significant errors, such as those listed above.
Where possible it is also advisable to print out your pages, as it is easier to see mistakes on paper than on screen.
If you recognize that copy writing, spelling and grammar aren’t your strong point then invest in a professional copywriter or marketing agency who can craft the copy that you need.
Charles Duncombe has already proven that good, error-free copy can double your sales, so it could be money well spent!
