So, what is AI Max?
AI Max is a new enhancement within Google Ads Search campaigns, designed to boost performance through identifying search queries that an advertiser may have missed. Key features include:
- Expanded Query Matching: AI Max utilises keywordless technology to identify high-performing search queries beyond existing keywords targeted within an account
- Text Customisation: The automation tool dynamically generates and adjusts ad headlines and descriptions based on landing pages, ads, and keywords to align with user intent.
- Granular targeting: Advertisers can target by geographic location at ad group level, include or exclude specific brands, and access improved reporting with clearer insights on search terms, headline performance, and asset-level KPIs such as spend and conversions.
Some words of caution
While there is no doubt that the ability to tap into previously unconsidered search queries will provide benefit to businesses who use search campaigns, it does raise some concerns for us.
Firstly, this is not a ‘fit and forget’ strategy – an AI-powered strategy like this will need continuous monitoring to avoid wasting budget on vast amounts of new but irrelevant traffic. Negative keywords and exclusions will be vital to keep traffic targeted and converting.
Secondly, as this new tool will rely heavily on your website content, it needs to reflect exactly what you offer and be optimised towards the right kind of traffic. The success of a campaign such as this depends on what you are supplying the AI tool to learn from.
